8 Must-Know Kiwi phrases
When relocating to New Zealand from the US, many are comforted by the fact that English is spoken (alongside our other two official languages - Te Reo Maori and NZ Sign Language).
But, be warned! It may not be quite the English you're used to.
As with any nation, New Zealand has its own unique phrases and sayings. Here are a few you might want to know before your arrival:
Togs: Swimwear. "Don't forget your togs; we're off to the beach!"
Bach: A holiday home, often by the beach. Traditionally a simple dwelling but now can refer to even the most luxurious properties. "We're spending the summer holidays at the bach."
Jandals: Basic rubber footwear; flip-flops or thongs in other countries. "Don't forget to wear your jandals; the sand is really hot to walk on."
Yeah Nah: Indecision or "probably not," often used jokingly. "Yeah right" (sarcastic) means definitely not. "Go swimming in the middle of winter? Yeah right."
Snowed Under: Overwhelmed with work or other tasks. "I was snowed under and didn't leave work till 10 pm."
Tiki Tour: Going for a drive to look around, taking the scenic route, or a journey with no specific destination. "I took Mum on a tiki tour around Auckland last weekend."
Sus: Short for suspect or suspicious, referring to something or someone untrustworthy. "That meat pie has been sitting there a while; could be sus."
Chuffed: Quietly delighted and feeling proud. "My son was chuffed to come first in his swimming race."
